As I’ve really started to use Visual Studio Code as my daily editor of choice, I can never remember all of the little tips and hints you hear on podcasts. Thankfully the VS Code team has a great little doc up that you can use to refresh your memory. I really like the tip of using the automated script to allow command line access on the Mac. I couldn’t remember how to do that.

Render Blocking CSS
When building a performant web site, we all always look to the complexity of our DOM, file sizes, and bundle size/splitting to drive the performance of our web site. One thing we always seem to forget is that CSS is a render blocking asset. The complexity and breadth of the CSS we built will block rendering and give the user a poor experience, especially on an underpowered device.

Finally Apple has cleaned up the App Store
Finally; finally; Apple has removed broken and outdated apps from the App Store. I always hated when you go looking for an app, find one that sounds perfect, and then you find out it hasn’t been updated in two years. Or you find an app that sounds super promising, but it has some bad reviews. And they you realize the developer hasn’t done anything since iOS 5. Hopefully this will make much easier to find apps and reward developers that are keep their applications up to date.

AnandTech Reviews the 6TB Western Digital RedPro HDD
AnandTech has a good writeup taking a look at the 6 TeraByte version of Western Digital RedPro Drives. These are the 7200 rpm versions of their Red NAS line designed to be in racks with up to 16 drives with firmware tuned for NAS applications.
I’ve been using some of the 3TB non-Pro versions in my Drobo 5N for some time now with good results. I don’t need the extra speed and heat that the Pro models have. I also only need drives tuned to work together in a box with 5 or less bays in it.

The Hurt Locker – Movie Review
I was looking for something to watch on Netflix this afternoon that wasn’t an episode of Sons of Anarchy. The Hurt Locker appeared in a list of recommendations and I thought why not. Let’s just say, color me disappointed.

Macalope vs. The Apple is a religion cult
Once again the Macalope skewers the “any people that support Apple are brainwashed cult members crowd.” The funny part is that those who spout this are just as loud and fervent as the so called ones they say belong to a “cult.” I’d say they are members in a religion of their own, “I hate Apple more than anything.”

ArsTechnica: Dell XPS 13 Review
Ars Techinca has a review of the brand new Dell XPS 13. I have to say it looks absolutely beautiful and looks functional to boot. Working with a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro everyday makes you appreciate the light weight and size. Maybe I can get work to buy me one of these and hand down the Yoga to one of the young new devs. 🙂

Amazing Bridge Photography
Being born in the Tri-State area, you get to know the names of every bridge in and out of New York City. Urban Industrial Imaging has some great night shots of all the most famous bridges. And some not so famous ones as well. The falls in Patterson is one of my favorites. http://www.urbanindustrialimaging.com
